wikipedia
Błonia is an expansive urban park in Kraków, covering an area of 48 hectares, with a history dating back to 1162. At that time, Jaksa of Miechów donated the land to the Norbertine convent in exchange for a blessing before his pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In 1254, Bishop Jan Prandota welcomed an envoy from Assisi on Błonia, and in 1366, the Norbertine sisters attempted to exchange the land for a townhouse, though this effort ultimately failed. Over the centuries, Błonia remained a neglected area, with floods from the Rudawa River turning it into a marsh. However, after being drained in the 19th century, it became a popular gathering place. Key to Błonia’s development were the establishment of a promenade in 1908 and the founding of two sports clubs: Cracovia and Wisła. During World War II, there were plans to develop Błonia, but ultimately its fate took a different turn. In 1834, cattle grazing was banned on the Planty, making Błonia the only legal pasture in Kraków. Architecturally, Błonia is surrounded by a quadrilateral formed by 3 Maja Avenue, Piastowska Street, Na Błoniach Street, and Marshal Ferdinand Foch Avenue, and is recognized as the largest urban meadow in Europe. Throughout its history, Błonia has hosted numerous cultural events, including military parades, reviews, the first airplane flights, and massive gatherings of the faithful during papal pilgrimages, which drew hundreds of thousands of people. It has also been the site of important national anniversary celebrations. In modern times, Błonia has welcomed concerts and large-scale events, such as performances by renowned artists like Céline Dion, and fan zones during the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. This place blends rich history with contemporary culture and architecture, forming a vital hub of social life in Kraków.
