Baćkowice is a rural commune located in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, in Opatów County, with its administrative seat in Baćkowice. The commune covers an area of 96.25 km², dominated by agricultural land (73%) and forests (22%). In 2004, the population was 5,163 inhabitants. The commune was established on January 13, 1867, as part of the administrative reform of the Kingdom of Poland, and its first county was Opatów in the Radom Governorate, with a population of 1,952 at the time. During the interwar period, Baćkowice remained part of Opatów County in the Kielce Voivodeship, and after World War II, it retained its administrative affiliation. The commune was abolished in 1954 as a result of a reform introducing gromadas (smaller administrative units) but was reinstated on January 1, 1973. Among the villages within the commune are Baranówek, Gołoszyce, Modliborzyce, and Olszownica. Neighboring communes include Iwaniska, Łagów, Opatów, Sadowie, and Waśniów.
