Barcin

Barcin, a town in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, boasts a rich history dating back to the 12th century when a settlement was first established. It is located on the Noteć River, 35 kilometers from Bydgoszcz. Barcin received its town rights before 1479, with its market privilege officially granted in 1472. The Krotoski family played a significant role in the town’s history, and in 1560, it became a center for the Czech Brethren. After the partitions of Poland, the town was incorporated into Prussia, and in 1919, it returned to Poland following the Greater Poland Uprising. Jews were active in Barcin since the 17th century, primarily engaged in butchery and trade. However, due to migration in the 20th century, the Jewish community dwindled, and the synagogue was eventually closed. Today, Barcin serves as a local industrial hub, particularly known for building materials production thanks to its limestone quarries. The Pomeranian Special Economic Zone has been established in the area, with new social housing investments planned. Architectural highlights include the neo-Romanesque Church of St. James from 1901, a 19th-century classical manor house, and numerous roadside shrines. A notable modern attraction is Freedom Park, opened in 2018, which features a skatepark and a leisure pavilion, serving as a venue for local cultural events such as the Honey Days Festival. Culturally, Barcin thrives thanks to the Municipal Cultural Center, which organizes various artistic events, including the Sung Poetry Festival and the Barciński Film Festival. The local Public Library, recognized in national rankings, actively engages residents through diverse programs. Sports also play an important role, with clubs representing various disciplines and modern sports facilities available. Barcin maintains international ties through its partnership with the Ukrainian city of Burshtyn, highlighting its openness to cross-border cooperation.
