wikipedia
Biecz is a picturesque town located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship's Gorlice County, known for its rich history and preserved monuments. Often referred to as the "Pearl of Podkarpacie" or the "Polish Carcassonne," the town lies on the Ropa River amidst the hills of the Carpathian Foothills. Biecz boasts numerous architectural landmarks, including a 15th-century Gothic town hall, the Corpus Christi Collegiate Church, and a monastery complex of the Reformed Franciscans. The town has a fascinating history dating back to the Neolithic era, with the first written records appearing in 13th-century chronicles. It was granted Magdeburg rights in 1257, which contributed to its development as an administrative and commercial center, complete with active courts and three castles. At its peak, Biecz was also the starting point of the Galician Oil Route, and oil deposits were discovered in the area. After a period of decline in the 17th century due to war and epidemics, the town began to rebuild in the 19th century with the growth of the petrochemical industry. Biecz's cultural life thrives through the activities of local organizations, festivals, and the Museum of the Biecz Land, which houses regional exhibits. The town is home to numerous folk and cultural ensembles, a public library, and a cultural center. Interesting local legends, such as those about the knight Becz and the alleged executioners' academy, add a mysterious atmosphere. Despite its small population (around 4,600), Biecz remains an important tourist destination in Lesser Poland, offering a rich cultural heritage and historic sites that attract visitors.
