wikipedia
Biłgoraj is a city in southeastern Poland, in the Lublin Voivodeship, with a rich history dating back to the 16th century when it was founded by the Gorajski noble family. As a noble town, Biłgoraj quickly became an important commercial and craft center, particularly in sieve-making. The city's architecture is largely the result of post-1944 development, as much of it was destroyed during World War II. Today, Biłgoraj features a few historical monuments, such as the Baroque Holy Trinity Church, the eclectic St. George's Church, and the Sieve-Making Farm Open-Air Museum, which showcases the sieve-making traditions. The city holds the title "City of Three Cultures" due to its multicultural heritage, encompassing Poles, Jews, and Ruthenians, which is reflected in its local cuisine and customs. Particularly noteworthy is the Biłgoraj pierogi, protected as a traditional product. Biłgoraj actively participates in cultural life by organizing artistic events and festivals, such as the Singer's Days Festival, honoring the legacy of Isaac Bashevis Singer, and the Festival of Cultures, which promotes local traditions and international cultures. The city is also an important industrial center, particularly in light industry. Interestingly, it is home to various sports teams and hosts recurring events like the National Tanew Cup Car Rally. Biłgoraj serves as a key transportation hub and a base for tourists visiting the nearby Roztocze region and Solska Wilderness.
