wikipedia
The Bircza Commune, with its seat in Bircza, is an urban-rural municipality located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, within the Przemyśl County, in the region of the Przemyśl Foothills. Within its boundaries lies the Arłamów landing strip, which was built on the site of the former Krajna airfield. The history of the commune dates back to the Middle Ages, but its current form was established after World War II. Over the centuries, this area belonged to various administrative units, including the lands of Przemyśl and Sanok. During the Second Polish Republic, the Bircza Commune was part of the Dobromil County, and its territory was in some places the scene of fierce fighting during the September Campaign of 1939. After the war, the commune underwent a series of administrative changes and reconstruction, and was formally established in 1973. According to data from 2002, the modern commune covers an area of 254.49 km², with forest land (59%) predominating over agricultural land (34%). The demographics of the commune changed drastically, from a pre-war population of about 25,000 to just 6,996 in 2006, as a result of displacements and persecutions in the 20th century. Today, the commune is home to numerous schools, and local events, such as anniversaries of battles and patriotic celebrations, attract residents. An interesting fact is the plans to transform the Arłamów landing strip into a functioning airport, which has sparked heated public debate. The Bircza Commune is rich in tourist opportunities, including hiking and cycling trails, educational paths, and picturesque areas that are part of the emerging National Park. There are also many horse stables here, which promotes outdoor activities. An interesting element of the local culture is the honorary citizens of the commune, who include well-known historical figures, as well as regional initiatives aimed at preserving cultural heritage and promoting local traditions.
