The municipality of Czarny Dunajec, located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship within the Nowy Targ County, boasts a rich history dating back to 1934. It was established from the territories of the abolished town of Czarny Dunajec and the rural commune of Wróblówka. During World War II, the municipality retained its borders and became part of the Kraków District of the General Government. After the war, the pre-war administrative structure was restored, but in 1954, the municipality was dissolved. It regained its status as a commune on January 1, 1973, initially comprising 10 village districts (sołectwa). Over time, due to various administrative reforms, it expanded to include 15 village districts, including Chochołów and Ciche. On January 1, 2023, following public consultations where the majority of residents supported the move, Czarny Dunajec acquired urban-rural status.
