wikipedia
Czarna Góra is a village located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in the Tatra County, on the Białka River, within the historical region of Spiš. It is home to the "Korkosz" Homestead, which is listed in the register of immovable monuments and currently operates as a branch of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane. The village's architecture retains its traditional character, with wooden houses and remnants of pastoral farming. The history of Czarna Góra dates back to the late 16th century, with the first records mentioning the settlement of Vlachs in an area known as Sołtystwo. The village was under the administration of various noble families, including the Horvaths, until the emancipation of the peasants in 1848. Over time, Czarna Góra gradually expanded, increasing the number of farmsteads. In the 19th century, national movements led to ethnic tensions, particularly between Slovaks and Poles. After World War I, the village briefly became part of Poland before being officially incorporated in 1920. During World War II, it was under Slovak control, which resulted in relatively better living conditions for its residents compared to those on the other side of the river under German occupation. Today, the culture of Czarna Góra is reflected in the use of the Spiš dialect and traditional costumes, and the village is known for its regional folk ensembles, such as Kałe Bała. The community enjoys a vibrant cultural and social life, including gliding competitions and popular ski resorts. At its highest peak, Czarna Góra (902 meters above sea level), stands the Millennium Cross and a viewing pavilion offering stunning panoramic views of the Tatra Mountains. The village is also home to two churches and primary schools that emphasize local identity. With its rich historical heritage, Czarna Góra is also known by alternative names, such as "Čierna Hora" in Slovak. Its history, culture, and architecture contribute to the unique character of this picturesque Tatra village.
