Kowal is a rural commune in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship, belonging to the Włocławek County. Its seat is the town of Kowal, and in 2017 it was inhabited by 3,959 people. The commune covers an area of 114.75 km², of which 67% is agricultural land and 22% is forest, constituting 7.79% of the area of Włocławek County. Within the commune, there are two nature reserves: Jezioro Rakutowskie, which is faunal in nature and protects rare bird species, and Olszyny Rakutowskie, which protects alder forests and ash-alder riparian woodlands. The commune boasts a rich architectural heritage, including several registered immovable monuments. Particularly noteworthy are: the manor park from the 17th–19th centuries in Bogusławice, the manor complex from the early 20th century in Dąbrówka, and the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene from 1889 in Grabkowo. In Nakonowo, there is a wooden filial church of St. Mark the Evangelist from 1765, and Unisławice takes pride in a manor complex from the second half of the 18th century, which includes a manor house and a park from the late 19th century. The commune also features a palace complex from the years 1880–1890 in Więsławice. The Kowal commune has a rich structure of villages (sołectwa), such as Bogusławice, Dąbrówka, Unisławice, Więsławice-Parcele, as well as the locality of Mursk, which does not have the status of a village. Neighboring communes include Baruchowo, Choceń, Kowal (town), Lubień Kujawski, and Włocławek. The commune combines cultural and natural values, and its history and monuments attract both residents and tourists.
