wikipedia
Boyen Fortress, built between 1844 and 1856 in Giżycko, is a monumental fortification with a distinctive star-shaped layout, covering an area of approximately 100 hectares. It held strategic importance throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its construction was commissioned by order of King Frederick William IV, and the design was created by Johann Leopold Ludwig Brese, known for his other fortification works. The charm of the fortress lies not only in its architecture but also in its strategic location on a narrow isthmus between Lakes Kisajno and Niegocin, which made it a key defensive point for East Prussia. The interior of the fortress could accommodate up to 3,000 soldiers, underscoring its military significance in the region. During World War I, the fortress played a crucial role in the defense of Giżycko, with its artillery supporting frontline operations, even though it was never directly attacked. After the war, it was deemed obsolete and repurposed for support functions, including use as a hospital. During World War II, the fortress buildings housed field hospitals and intelligence units. In 1945, the Germans abandoned the fortress without a fight, and in the following years, it came under the control of the Polish military, which, however, failed to protect it from devastation. In 1975, the fortress was granted the status of an architectural monument. After the military vacated the site, it fell into disrepair, suffering from vandalism and fires. In 1994, the Boyen Fortress Lovers' Society began modernizing the area, opening it to visitors, creating tourist trails, and establishing a museum. Today, the fortress hosts a variety of cultural events, such as historical reenactments and concerts in its amphitheater, making it an important landmark on the tourist map of Giżycko and the entire Masurian region. An interesting fact is that during World War II, the fortress also served as a training center for officers of the Vlasov Army, highlighting its unconventional use during that period. Despite numerous challenges, Boyen Fortress continues to attract both tourists and history enthusiasts.
