Byczyna, located in the Opole Voivodeship, is a town with a rich history dating back to medieval times. Known as one of the oldest towns in Silesia, Byczyna has its roots in the Duchy of Wrocław. The first written mention of the settlement dates back to 1228. The town has preserved many original architectural elements, including medieval defensive walls from the 15th and 16th centuries that almost entirely surround it, as well as distinctive towers. Among the notable monuments are the Baroque-style Holy Trinity Parish Church from 1767 and the Gothic Evangelical Church of St. Nicholas from the 14th century. Byczyna hosts numerous cultural events, such as the annual Polish Oldboys Football Championships, painting plein-airs, and international knight tournaments held twice a year. The town is also known for legends about the origin of its name, which are linked to cattle breeding and the discovery of treasure. In 1945, Byczyna came under Polish administration, and its former German name, Pitschen, was replaced by its current one. The town also thrives thanks to an active sports scene, with several sports clubs such as Hetman Byczyna and GUKS Byczyna in table tennis. Byczyna is well-connected, with important national and regional roads as well as railway lines passing through it. An interesting fact is the Monument of Gratitude to Soviet Soldiers, which was removed in 2022 at the request of the residents. Its architecture, monuments, and cultural traditions make Byczyna an interesting destination for tourists and history enthusiasts.
