wikipedia
Bytkowice, known in German as Böthkenwalde, is a village in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, within the Bydgoszcz County, whose history dates back to the early 19th century. The location of the village was once part of a forested area, and its transformation into a village began under a decree issued by the Prussian King Frederick William II in 1834. Based on this order, land was allocated for the new settlement, and the remaining areas were divided among neighboring villages. In 1837, the sale of plots began, and new settlers were obliged to follow strict construction rules (including minimizing fire hazards) and to maintain access roads. Bytkowice developed as part of Prussian colonization, and its name derives from the mayor of Bydgoszcz, Carl August Boethke. In the pre-World War II period, the German population accounted for 75% of the residents. The village had an evangelical school and a cemetery with graves, some of which date back to the German era. After the war, the region was repopulated by repatriates, and the village retained its historical layout. Architecturally, it was known for a manor built by the Hinz family, which burned down in 1945. Today, the village has a stable structure, and many of its features have remained unchanged since the 19th century. An interesting fact is a dramatic murder in 1933 that attracted the attention of the local press. It is also worth noting that after World War II, the village continued to face challenges in maintaining education, and the school resumed operations between 1956 and 1968. Currently, the adjectival form "bytkowicki" is used, although recommendations suggest "bytkowski." Bytkowice is an example of a region that combines rich historical and architectural heritage, having undergone numerous socio-cultural changes.
