Church of All Saints in Krościenko nad Dunajcem

The Church of All Saints in Krościenko nad Dunajcem is a Gothic-Baroque temple that was built before the mid-14th century. Its history is rich, as it has played a significant role in the life of the local community. Traditionally, it stands out for its medieval structure and Baroque details, constructed from irregular blocks of quarry stone, which reflects the simplicity of its construction. The nave was added in the 16th century, and the tower was built at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, highlighting the architectural evolution of this site. Inside the church, fragments of polychrome paintings have been preserved, dating back to the years 1370–1380, as well as later decorations, testifying to its rich artistic history. Interestingly, the church’s location was once threatened by the Dunajec River, which necessitated the reinforcement of the slopes. The church cemetery, which had existed since the Middle Ages, fell out of use after damage in the 18th century, and a new necropolis was established in a different location. The church has undergone multiple renovations, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, which improved its technical condition. In 1966, new stained-glass windows were installed, and conservation work continued in the 1970s and 1980s, leading to the discovery and preservation of valuable paintings. The church is also a site of numerous cultural traditions, and its significance grew after World War II when much of the parish life shifted to a newly built temple. Nevertheless, the Church of All Saints continues to attract tourists and locals alike. Its unique blend of architectural styles, rich interior, and numerous epitaphs commemorating significant figures from the region’s history make it an important historical and cultural landmark. Today, its polychrome paintings are being studied and conserved, ensuring the preservation of this important heritage for future generations.
