wikipedia
The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Bartne is an 18th-century Greek Catholic temple, built in 1842, which now serves as a museum branch of the Karwacjan and Gładysz Manor Museum in Gorlice. The building is surrounded by a wooden log fence, reconstructed in place of a 19th-century stone wall. Nearby, there is a stone granary with an exhibition on the history of stonemasonry and a wooden rammer used for stone processing. The adjacent Lemko cemetery, with its stone tombstones, testifies to the local stonemasonry tradition. Architecturally, the church is oriented, built using log construction, and divided into three parts, with a square floor plan. The larger nave and the women's gallery (babiniec) are partially located under the tower, while the adjoining rectangular presbytery is closed off with a sacristy on the northern side. The leaning tower, featuring a false attic, is topped with a cupola-shaped spire, giving the structure its distinctive appearance. The roofs and walls are covered with wood shingles, and the interiors are decorated with flat ceilings adorned with polychrome paintings. The most valuable element of the furnishings is the late Baroque iconostasis from the 18th century, which includes much older 16th-century patronal icons. The history of the church is inextricably linked to the displacement of the Lemko population after 1947, which led to its neglect and partial destruction. After comprehensive conservation work between 1968 and 1970, the church regained its original appearance. Interestingly, the lower sections of the tower may date back to the 18th century, underscoring the architectural and historical significance of this site, which was added to the list of heritage monuments in 1997 and included in the Małopolska Wooden Architecture Trail. The church, its surroundings, and its history reflect local traditions, culture, and craftsmanship, making it an important landmark in the region's heritage.
