wikipedia
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gryfice, also known as St. Mary's Church, is a unique Gothic sacral building whose history dates back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Built on a polygonal plan, the church is characterized by its ribbed vaulting and tracery adorning the façades. Its architecture combines Gothic elements with later styles, such as Renaissance and Baroque. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous reconstructions and rebuildings, especially after the fires in 1496, 1562, and 1658. The interior of the church is filled with valuable monuments, including a Romanesque baptismal font from the 13th century and a Gothic triptych from the late 15th century. The church was consecrated in 1498, and in its history, it transitioned to Protestantism after the Reformation in 1534, which led to its neglect. Over time, thanks to the efforts of the local community and foundations, the building was restored and gained new furnishings, such as a Baroque main altar and an organ from 1732. The church is known for its beautiful stained glass windows and numerous 18th-century epitaphs. Its location in the central part of Gryfice's Old Town, near Victory Square, underscores its importance as a significant place of worship and a tourist attraction. It is worth noting the unique decorative elements, such as metope friezes and mascarons, which are rare in the West Pomerania region. Due to its architectural and historical value, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been entered into the register of monuments. In recent years, conservation work and illumination have been carried out, further highlighting the beauty of this monumental structure.
