wikipedia
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ostroróg is a Roman Catholic temple with a rich history dating back to at least the 14th century. An inscription on the church wall bears the date 1222, though it cannot be linked to the building itself. In 1419, a church dedicated to St. John the Baptist was mentioned, and the current structure, known for later renovations, was likely built in the first half of the 15th century. It is worth noting that in 1555, the church was handed over to the Czech Brethren but was returned to Catholic hands by 1636. Numerous renovations took place in the 19th century, including a reconstruction in 1776 that gave it a Baroque form. The building features Late Gothic, Baroque-influenced architecture, a three-nave hall layout, and a distinctive tower topped with an onion dome. The interior is adorned with 18th-century polychrome paintings depicting scenes from the life of John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary, while the furnishings reflect Rococo and Louis XVI styles. Key interior elements include the main altar with a 17th-century painting of St. James, Rococo side altars, and a pulpit. The church is surrounded by walls and Late Baroque gates from the 18th century. Previously, the area around the church contained graves of notable figures, including an obelisk dedicated to General Emilian Węgierski. An interesting legend tells of King John III Sobieski, who is said to have planted the linden trees in front of the church, while another speaks of a secret tunnel leading from the church to the castle. The church held both religious and cultural significance, with a history tied to education and the activities of the Czech Brethren. Today, it undergoes frequent renovations, reflecting the local community’s commitment to preserving this historical heritage.
