Church of the Most Holy Savior in Kraków

The Church of the Most Holy Savior is a historic temple located in Kraków in the Zwierzyniec district, at 5 św. Bronisławy Street. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Baroque elements, and the interior is single-naved, barrel-vaulted, with a separate presbytery. The church houses valuable 16th-century paintings and Baroque statues of saints, as well as a Renaissance painting by Kacper Kurcz. The main altar, which dates back to the 20th century, contains a Romanesque altar mensa. It is worth noting the preserved pulpit from 1605 and the historic positive organ from 1859. The church is surrounded by an old cemetery, where the graves of Norbertine sisters and tombstones of Kościuszko insurgents are located, reflecting its historical and cultural context. The history of the temple dates back to pagan times, and the first written mention comes from 1148. The church underwent numerous changes and destructions, including during the Mongol invasion and the Swedish "Deluge." Renovations were carried out until the 20th century, and the cemetery was in use until the 19th century. The church also features plaques commemorating events such as the anniversary of the January Uprising. An interesting element of local legend is the musician depicted at the feet of the crucified Christ in the painting by Kacper Kurcz, which captures the attention of visitors. The Church of the Most Holy Savior not only serves religious functions but also constitutes an important part of Kraków's cultural heritage.
