Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Krakow

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Krakow, designed by Franciszek Mączyński, is a significant example of Young Poland architecture, blending modernist elements with Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque traditions. Construction of the church began in 1909, and it was consecrated on May 29, 1921, in the presence of numerous bishops. Known for its 68-meter-high tower, the church is built of red brick with gray stone details, and its interior features delicate polychrome paintings and mosaics. Particularly noteworthy is the main altar, designed by Mączyński and enriched with a mosaic by Leonard Strojnowski, depicting saints paying homage to Christ. The six side altars contain sculptures by Karol Hukan, with the figure of the Angelic Mother of God standing out as one of the most important works of interwar sacred art in Poland. An interesting fact is that the basilica's interior is divided into three naves, and its vaults are among the first in Krakow made of reinforced concrete. The church, with a history dating back to 1868 when Jesuits settled in the area, has undergone multiple renovations, the most recent in 2007. In 1960, Pope John XXIII granted it the title of a minor basilica, and it has been listed as a historic monument since 1966. Combining rich history with timeless architectural beauty, this site remains an important cultural and religious landmark in Krakow.
