wikipedia
The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Dorothea in Opatówek is a significant Roman Catholic monument in Greater Poland, distinguished by its architecture and rich history. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages when, around 1370, a Gothic brick church was built on the site of a former wooden temple, funded by Archbishop Jarosław Bogoria Skotnicki. Originally, the church featured chapels and an apse closing off the presbytery, with its design reflecting local architectural traditions. The church underwent multiple renovations, including in the 18th century and between 1905–1912 under the direction of architect Konstanty Wojciechowski, when it was given its current name. The present-day Neo-Gothic style is evident in its soaring towers and richly decorated interior, including the main altar and numerous stained-glass windows depicting apostles and saints. The cultural significance of the church is highlighted by numerous works of art, such as the "Opatówek Triptych," now housed in the National Museum in Warsaw. Due to its aesthetic and historical value, the church plays an important role in the life of the local community. An interesting fact is that despite their Evangelical background, the donors of the altar, Ferdinand and Maria Nietsche, supported the construction of this Catholic church, reflecting Opatówek’s broad cultural context. It is also worth noting that the interior of the church has retained a harmonious simplicity, attracting both worshippers and tourists. After successful conservation efforts, its space has become more representative, despite unfortunate changes such as the disappearance of the brass balustrade in 1991.
