wikipedia
Ciechanów is a city in Poland, located in the Masovian Voivodeship, with a rich history dating back to the early Middle Ages. The first written mention of Ciechanów comes from 1065, and the city was the site of local assemblies (sejmiks) and the seat of a castellany. During the medieval period, Ciechanów served as a defensive and trade hub; its residents engaged in commerce with distant cities. A significant event in the city's history was the construction of a castle by Duke Janusz I the Elder in the 14th century, as well as the foundation of an Augustinian monastery. Following administrative reforms, Ciechanów became a royal city, but after the Third Partition of Poland, it declined in importance, transforming into a provincial town. The architecture of Ciechanów includes the ruins of a 14th-century princely castle, a Neo-Gothic town hall from 1844, and a 16th-century parish church. Also noteworthy is the Farska Góra stronghold from the 11th century, as well as cemeteries, including a new Jewish cemetery established in the late 19th century. The city thrives culturally thanks to institutions such as the Museum of the Masovian Nobility, the District Center for Culture and Art, and annual festivals, including the National Theater Festival "Dionizje." Ciechanów also boasts a vibrant sports scene, with local clubs and scouting organizations. An interesting fact is that the first steam brewery in Masovia was built here in the 19th century. Despite a challenging past marked by invasions and occupation, Ciechanów has evolved over the years into a dynamic economic center, poised for further development in the region. The city cooperates with numerous international partners, including Meudon in France and Haldensleben in Germany, fostering cultural exchange and sharing best practices in local governance.
