wikipedia
The Cistercian Abbey in Rudy, also known as Zisterzienserkloster Groß Rauden, is a Romanesque-Gothic abbey located in the Racibórz County of the Silesian Voivodeship. Today, it functions as the Post-Cistercian Monastery and Palace Complex. The site includes the Sanctuary of the Humble Mother of God and the Formation and Education Center of the Gliwice Diocese. Registered as a historical monument, the abbey comprises the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a monastery converted into a palace, and a 17th-century park. The church, built in the Gothic style, features a three-nave structure and is known for its rich interior, although it was partially destroyed in a fire in 1945. The image of the Mother of God of Rudy, housed in the monastery chapel, attracts numerous pilgrims, and the site is being considered for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The history of the abbey dates back to the mid-13th century when Duke Władysław of Opole brought the Cistercians to the area, granting them surrounding villages. The Cistercians contributed significantly to the region's economic development by founding new villages and utilizing local resources for the production of various goods. The monastery also played an educational role; a school was established in the 14th century, followed by a gymnasium. After the secularization decree of 1810, the abbey lost its monastic status, and its properties were transferred to secular hands, becoming a princely residence. In the 20th century, the complex suffered extensive damage during World War II, but post-war reconstruction efforts were gradually undertaken. Since 1998, the abbey has been owned by the Gliwice Diocese. Through numerous restoration works and the revival of its religious character, it has become an important center of religious worship, enriching the life of the local community. In 2009, the monastic church was elevated to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI.
