The Contemporary Museum Wrocław (MWW), opened in 2011, is housed in a former six-story air-raid shelter from World War II, designed by Richard Konwiarz. The building, with its over one-meter-thick external walls, was adapted for museum purposes by architects from the CH+ Architekci and VROA studios. It combines the rawness of concrete walls with modern elements such as a glass terrace offering panoramic views and the designer space Beautiful Tube. As the only museum in Poland located in a shelter, and one of the few such examples in Europe, MWW stands out as a unique venue on Wrocław's cultural map. The museum promotes contemporary art by collecting works from local and international artists, with a focus on neo-avant-garde. Despite challenges in constructing a new building—initially planned to complete the "museum district"—MWW emphasizes education and community engagement, organizing workshops, debates, and events for seniors and people with disabilities. Throughout its existence, the museum has hosted numerous significant exhibitions, such as "The Germans Did Not Come" and "Wild Fields," which draw on local contexts and issues, and has established the Jerzy Ludwiński Archive, highlighting Wrocław's cultural identity. An interesting feature is Stanisław Dróżdż's mural on the shelter's facade, which underscores the city's artistic heritage. MWW strives to bring art closer to the community, and its unique history and architecture combine to create a modern cultural center.
