Wrocław

Wrocław, one of the oldest cities in Poland, is located on the Silesian Lowland, on the Oder River. It is a city with county rights and also the capital of Lower Silesia. Wrocław's location along two major trade routes contributed to its development, and the city has been an important commercial and administrative center throughout various historical periods. The history of Wrocław dates back to the Middle Ages, when a bishopric was established there in the year 1000. Over the centuries, Wrocław passed through the hands of many rulers, and political changes influenced its demographics and architecture, represented by Gothic churches such as the Archcathedral of St. John the Baptist, as well as numerous Renaissance and Baroque townhouses. Interestingly, the city limits encompass numerous islands on the Oder River and over 400 bridges, earning Wrocław the nickname "Venice of the North." The city stands out for its rich cultural life; Wrocław was the European Capital of Culture in 2016, hosted the World Congress of Intellectuals, and organizes various festivals, such as Jazz on the Oder and Wratislavia Cantans. The Wrocław dwarfs, symbolic figurines that enjoy immense popularity, are a tourist attraction, as are Oder River cruises and historic trams. The Zoo with its Afrykarium (Africa-themed oceanarium), the oldest zoo in Poland, and the UNESCO-listed Centennial Hall are just some of the city's treasures. Wrocław also attracts students; with over 150,000 students, it is home to higher education institutions such as the University of Wrocław and Wrocław University of Science and Technology. It is also worth noting that the city hosted UEFA Euro 2012 and the World Weightlifting Championships in 2013.
