wikipedia
Centrum Nauki Kopernik is a station on the M2 line of the Warsaw Metro, located in the Śródmieście district, near the Vistula River. Construction began in 2010, and the station was opened on March 8, 2015. The station's architecture, designed by Andrzej Chołdzyński with the participation of Wojciech Fangor, features a modern design and a dominant blue color that gives the interior a sense of lightness. Unique glass entrances shaped like butterflies and long escalators (the longest in Poland, measuring 40.4 m) add to the station's aesthetic appeal. It is worth noting its depth – 19 m below ground level – necessitated by the construction of tunnels drilled under the Vistula riverbed. The station is 144 m long and has been secured against flooding, which is crucial due to its proximity to the river. Interestingly, due to a construction accident in 2012, work was halted, which affected the project's completion timeline. Numerous cultural sites are located near the station, such as the Copernicus Science Centre, Elektrownia Powiśle, and the statue of the Warsaw Mermaid. Despite its attractive location, the station struggles with low passenger numbers, leading residents of Powiśle to advocate for improved bus connections to enhance accessibility for the elderly and people with disabilities. Despite initial challenges, the station has become an important landmark in Warsaw, blending modern transportation with the city's urban heritage.
