wikipedia
Czermin is a village located in Poland, within the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Mielec County, serving as the administrative seat of the gmina (municipality). In 1999, it had a population of 1,557. The settlement boasts a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, with traces of human habitation from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. Originally known as Wisłok, it was first mentioned in 1190 as the property of the Premonstratensian nuns from Busko-Zdrój. In 1257, the village was gifted to the monastery of the Poor Clares in Zawichost. By the 15th century, Czermin came into the hands of the Pacanowski family, later passing to the Wampowski and Mielecki families. The 17th century brought the Swedish Wars, which led to the construction of fortifications in the area. Following the First Partition of Poland in 1772, Czermin became part of the Habsburg Monarchy. In the 18th century, German Protestants settled here, building a school, a prayer house, and a cemetery. Their presence significantly influenced the local community's culture. In 1939, some villagers actively participated in the German Fifth Column, and during World War II, the population faced forced resettlement. The historic Church of St. Clement, built in 1630, is an example of early Baroque architecture. Its interior features valuable elements such as altars, a baptismal font, and polychrome paintings. The church is surrounded by a 19th-century fence. The parish cemetery, with a chapel dating back to 1750, and a war cemetery with graves of those who fell during World War I, are important parts of the village's heritage. At the central square of Czermin, there is a monument commemorating the victims of World War II, along with memorial plaques, including one honoring Jews murdered by the Nazis. Czermin is also associated with figures such as Marian Kantor and Jan Krawczyk. Today, the village remains an important regional center, preserving its historical and cultural legacy.
