wikipedia
Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) was a key energy company in Poland that operated independently from 1982 to 2022, after which it became part of PKN Orlen. PGNiG was involved in the exploration and extraction of natural gas and crude oil, as well as the import and distribution of gaseous and liquid fuels. The history of PGNiG dates back to 1976, when the Association of Oil and Gas Mining was established, and in 1982, the company was transformed into a state-owned enterprise. In 1996, PGNiG became a joint-stock company, and in the following years, it expanded its operations, including through the creation of regional branches and new subsidiaries. In 2005, PGNiG debuted on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. From 2011, the company carried out numerous investments, including the acquisition of Vattenfall Heat Poland and the development of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście, which enabled increased gas imports from the United States, Norway, and Qatar. PGNiG was responsible for the country's energy security and also operated abroad, including in Norway, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates. Between 2003 and 2022, PGNiG implemented many projects related to gas extraction and distribution, and expanded its gas capabilities in the Ukrainian market. PGNiG also participated in projects related to the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, aimed at diversifying gas sources. In 2022, PGNiG merged with PKN Orlen, which was intended to strengthen both companies' positions in the energy market. Interestingly, PGNiG was one of the key players in the European LNG market, and the 2020 ruling by the Stockholm Arbitration Tribunal ended a five-year dispute with Gazprom, significantly influencing gas pricing. The company supplied gas to approximately 7 million customers, including large enterprises such as combined heat and power plants and industrial plants, and its revenue in 2019 amounted to PLN 42.02 billion. PGNiG ceased operations as an independent entity following the completion of its merger with PKN Orlen in 2022, opening new opportunities for integration in Poland's energy sector.
