As a result of World War II, the area of the commune came under German occupation, becoming part of the Warsaw District of the General Government. After the war, from 1975 to 1998, the commune operated within the Ostrołęka Voivodeship. The commune covers an area of 167.45 km², of which 57% is agricultural land and 38% is forest.
