The name of the locality appears in various forms in documents dating back to the 13th century, and in a Latin chronicle from 1295–1305, it is mentioned as *Dithmari villa*. The village is known for the Church of St. Catherine, whose tower dates back to 1857 and features distinctive neo-Gothic architecture.
