Eugeniusz Geppert Street in Wrocław

Eugeniusz Geppert Street, located in the Old Town of Wrocław, is 111 meters long and connects Solny Square with Kazimierz Wielki Street. This area is protected as part of the Old Town urban complex, which is entered in the register of monuments, as well as being recognized as the historical city center and part of the "Old Town" Cultural Park. Along the street, there are historic buildings, including the Old Stock Exchange and the Heinrich von Rybisch tenement house, which are important examples of architecture from various eras. Historically, the street was called Schloßstraße (Castle Street) until 1983, when it was given its current name in honor of Eugeniusz Geppert, a Polish painter and organizer of the Academy of Fine Arts. The street, which is part of the municipal register of monuments, serves as an access road, is located in a 30 km/h speed limit zone, and is part of the bicycle path system. Its history dates back to around 1242, when it was laid out during the planning of Wrocław's Market Square. Over the centuries, the street has undergone many transformations. The section on the western side of the street is primarily built-up and protected, where the Old Stock Exchange and knightly tenement houses can be admired. In the 17th century, the area was associated with Baron Heinrich Gottfried von Spätgen, whose residence was transformed into the Royal Palace and later became the site of various museums. It is worth noting that in the 19th century, the neo-Romantic building of the Schlesische Boden Credit-Actien Bank was constructed on the street, which now serves as the headquarters of PKO BP S.A. From a cultural perspective, the street has witnessed many changes and events in the history of Wrocław, including destruction during World War II and reconstruction in the 1950s and 1960s. Eugeniusz Geppert Street, with its rich history, architecture, and cultural past, is an important element of Wrocław's heritage. An interesting fact is that the area where the street is now located was once the course of the Black Oława River, which played a fundamental role in the city's fortification system.
