wikipedia
The Evangelical-Augsburg Parish in Poznań, established in 1920, has roots dating back to the 16th century when the Reformation began to influence the region under the patronage of the Górka family. Between 1563 and 1592, Polish and German Lutheran parishes were formed. However, after destruction in the 17th century and a ban on public worship, Evangelicals were forced to relocate their services to Swarzędz. For over 200 years, Evangelical worship in Poznań was severely restricted, with local congregations, such as the church in Swarzędz, remaining active until the end of World War II. After Poland regained independence in 1919, the Polish Evangelical Society began efforts to organize Polish-language services, which continued until 1939 and the outbreak of World War II. During the occupation, the parish was completely dissolved, and its assets were confiscated. After the war, in 1945, the parish was reestablished. However, due to the destruction and seizure of churches by the authorities, services were held in a cemetery chapel, which served as a temporary place of worship until 2003. After 1990, positive changes allowed the parish to resume its activities. Between 2001 and 2004, a new Church of Divine Grace and a parish center were built, enabling further development of the community. In 2013, Rev. Marcin Kotas was appointed pastor, and the parish maintains an active cultural life, including concerts, exhibitions, and meetings for youth and seniors. The parish includes two branches in Gniezno and Września, as well as a historic Evangelical section at the Miłostowo Cemetery, where both parishioners and individuals of other faiths are buried, highlighting the multicultural character of the Poznań community. It is also worth noting that although many former Reformation-era churches in Poznań and the surrounding area no longer exist, their legacy is preserved through monuments and commemorative plaques. The parish plays a significant role in promoting Evangelical heritage and fostering social integration in the region.
