Firlej is a rural commune located in the Lublin Voivodeship, within the Lubartów County, with its administrative seat in the village of Firlej. The history of the commune dates back to 1870, when it was known as the Wola Skromowska commune. The commune covers an area of 126.37 km², of which 66% is agricultural land and 26% is forested. Firlej Commune constitutes 9.79% of the total area of Lubartów County. In 2007, the commune had a population of 6,174, but this number gradually decreased to 5,885 by 2019. The commune consists of numerous village administrative units (sołectwa), such as Baran, Bykowszczyzna, Firlej, and Sobolew, reflecting its diverse local structure. Architecturally, the region features typical Polish rural buildings, including single-family homes and communal facilities that may reflect local traditions and lifestyle. Culturally, the residents participate in local events such as festivals and harvest celebrations (dożynki), which play an important role in community integration. Historically, the area has its roots in ancient settlements, and administrative and naming changes attest to the region’s dynamic past. An interesting fact is that Firlej held commune status between 1975 and 1998, highlighting its significance within Poland’s administrative structure. Neighboring communes, such as Kock and Lubartów, along with nearby forests and agricultural areas, add to the region’s appeal, creating a picturesque landscape.
