Fort Gerhard in Świnoujście

Fort Gerhard, also known as Fort East, is one of the best-preserved Prussian artillery forts in Europe, located in Świnoujście on Wolin Island. Its construction began in 1848 as a response to the blockade of the port by a Danish frigate during the First Schleswig War. The fort was designed to defend the Świna Strait and consisted of two main elements: a redoubt and an artillery battery. In later years, between 1876 and 1877, the fort underwent reconstruction, integrating its earlier sections and introducing modern architectural features such as artillery terraces and ammunition storage facilities. Throughout its history, the fort was used by various military forces, including the German Navy and later the Soviet Army. In 2001, the fort was taken over by history enthusiasts who began working to revive local traditions. Today, Fort Gerhard houses the Museum of Coastal Defense, one of the largest private museums in Poland, with a collection of over 3,000 exhibits. The museum's offerings include exhibitions dedicated to artillery, the history of Świnoujście, and an armory. Fort Gerhard attracts numerous tourists, offering the opportunity to explore its well-preserved structures, such as casemates and caponiers connected by underground tunnels. On the parade ground, visitors can see the wreck of an Sd.Kfz. 7/2 half-track, adding further educational value. Fort Gerhard serves as a significant cultural and tourist attraction in the region, blending military history with education and historical reenactment.
