wikipedia
Fort Mokotów, located at 99 Racławicka Street in Warsaw, was built in the 1880s as part of the inner ring of the Warsaw Fortress. Its architecture is based on a regular pentagon with a dry moat, defended by brick caponiers. After modernization between 1889 and 1892, the fort was converted into a warehouse, with additional storage shelters added. Following the formal liquidation of the fortress in 1909, some of the fortifications were demolished, but all shelters and barracks were preserved, highlighting their architectural and historical significance. During the interwar period, the fort served as a transmission station for Polish Radio, making it a target for bombings during the defense of Warsaw in September 1939 and the site of heavy fighting. After World War II, from 1961 until the late 1980s, the fort housed the "Zarat" Radio and Television Plants, responsible for manufacturing broadcasting equipment. Today, the fort is surrounded by residential buildings and serves as the headquarters for various businesses. Fort Mokotów is legally protected—it is listed in the register of monuments as "Mokotów I" Fort (registration number 808, dated March 12, 1975), underscoring its cultural and historical value as part of Warsaw's heritage. Interestingly, despite its changing functions over the years, the fort's foundations and architectural details have been preserved, making it a fascinating example of adapting historical structures to modern needs.
