wikipedia
The Franciscan Monastery in Wieluń, located on Reformacka Street, is a significant religious and historical site, belonging to the Province of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Order of Friars Minor in Poland. It was founded in 1629 on the initiative of Marcin Wierusz Kowalski, Paweł Niewęgłowski, and Father Franciszek Frakstyn, with construction continuing until 1634. The monastery was initially associated with the Greater Poland Province of the Reformed Franciscans of St. Anthony. In the 17th century, it became a refuge for Irish monks fleeing religious persecution. In 1655, the monastery complex was plundered by the Swedes, and from 1662 to 1800, it housed a higher theological seminary. The architecture of the church, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Lord, was built in the Baroque style, featuring a single-nave structure and Rococo interior decorations. After World War II, the church underwent extensive renovation, and its unique polychrome work attracts visitors' attention. The monastery also houses paintings by Father Rafał Ernest Credo, a 19th-century Franciscan painter. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1864, it was temporarily repurposed for public use, but in 1921, it was reclaimed by the order and returned to its original province. During the interwar period, it served as a novitiate, and after the war, part of it was used by state authorities. A notable figure in the monastery's history is the Servant of God, Father Euzebiusz Huchracki, who served as the convent's vicar in 1936. The monastery's superiors changed over the years; between 1923 and 2020, the role of guardian was held by, among others, Father Karol Bik, Father Jakub Kubica, and Father Miłosz Kaczmarczyk, who currently holds the position. The Wieluń Monastery is an example of a lasting cultural heritage that has survived numerous historical upheavals and continues to fulfill its spiritual role in the region.
