Głuchołazy

Głuchołazy is a town located in the Opole Voivodeship and a showcase of Lower Silesia, with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Established in 1225, it initially developed under the patronage of the Bishop of Wrocław and the Margrave of Moravia, which gave it strategic importance. Over the centuries, Głuchołazy experienced various upheavals, including a fire caused by the Hussites and a flood in the 16th century, which temporarily halted the town's development. Notable features include its historic urban layout and the Church of St. Lawrence, first mentioned in 1285. The town also boasts defensive walls and other significant sites such as the cemetery church of St. Roch, a monument to Auschwitz prisoners, and the complex of the former bailiff's office. Głuchołazy is also known as a health resort; its natural geographical advantages and nearby nature reserves attract tourists. In 2018, the town received the title of City of the Order of the Smile—an institution honoring cities that are child-friendly—highlighting its commitment to social and cultural aspects. Głuchołazy hosts numerous cultural events, such as the Days of Głuchołazy and International Music Courses, and promotes tourism through hiking and cycling trails. An interesting fact is that the design of the Order of the Smile was created by a girl from Głuchołazy, strengthening local traditions.
