Giżycko is a rural municipality located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, renowned for its exceptional position in the central part of the Masurian Lake District, within the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes. The municipality covers an area of 289.76 km², with over 25% of its terrain covered by lakes. It features a picturesque young glacial landscape, characterized by undulating moraine uplands, hills of accumulative moraines, and depressions filled with lake sediments. Within its boundaries lie numerous lakes, including Niegocin and Kruklin, which attract water sports enthusiasts. The municipality also boasts the Giżycko-Mazury Residence airstrip. The region's high biodiversity has led to the establishment of several nature reserves, such as Lake Dobskie and the Spytkowo Peat Bog, as well as Natura 2000 areas. Demographically, the population increased from 7,642 in 2004 to 8,510 in 2019. The municipality consists of numerous village administrations and settlements, including Antonowo and Bogacko. Neighboring municipalities include Kętrzyn and Węgorzewo, fostering local cooperation and cultural exchange. Giżycko is not only a place of beautiful landscapes but also one rich in history and tradition, attracting tourists with its unique character and numerous opportunities for spending leisure time in nature.
