Gryfino

Gryfino, located in the western part of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, is a city with a rich history dating back to the 13th century, when it was established as a fishing settlement named Dąbrowa. In 1254, it was granted town rights. A significant point in its history was joining the Hanseatic League and conflicts with local rulers, which over time led to Gryfino becoming dependent on Szczecin. The city suffered numerous destructions, including fires and invasions, which impacted its economic development. After World War II, Gryfino became part of Poland, which involved the resettlement of the German population and the settlement of Poles, including military personnel. Today, Gryfino is the seat of an urban-rural municipality and has over 20,000 inhabitants. Among its architectural gems are the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an example of the late Romanesque-Gothic style, as well as the Brama Bańska (Ban Gate) and preserved 14th-century defensive walls. The city also boasts numerous monuments, such as the Pod Lwami Palace, the former slaughterhouse, and the post office building complex. Culturally, Gryfino thrives thanks to its numerous educational and sports facilities, as well as community activities such as the Gryfino Cycling Rallies. The city is home to a Tourist Information Center, which promotes local historical and tourist trails, including the Woja Żelisław Trail and the Blue Velo cycling route. Gryfino is also an important center for the timber and energy industries, with the Dolna Odra Power Plant as a key facility. The city cooperates with partner towns, and its residents are actively involved in local community life.
