wikipedia
The Hindenburg Mausoleum, also known as the Tannenberg Memorial, was located between Olsztynek and Sudwa. It was constructed between 1924 and 1927 as a monument to those who fell in the Battle of Tannenberg. From 1934 onward, it served as the mausoleum for Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, symbolizing German history and militarism. The architecture of the structure, designed by Walter and Johannes Krüger, was inspired by ancient Germanic places of worship, featuring eight towers arranged in a circle reminiscent of Stonehenge. The bricks used in its construction were intended to evoke the medieval Teutonic castles. The interior of the mausoleum was expanded to include crypts, altars, and spaces dedicated to exhibitions related to the military history of Prussia. From a cultural perspective, the mausoleum became a site for numerous rallies and pilgrimages during the Third Reich, underscoring its propaganda role. Historically, the site commemorated not only Hindenburg but also the victims of World War I. In 1945, facing the advancing offensive, German forces demolished the mausoleum to prevent its desecration by Soviet troops. After the war, the remains of the structure were dismantled, and the materials were repurposed for various construction projects in Warsaw and Olsztyn. In 2016, a decision was made to conduct archaeological excavations to uncover the secrets of the mausoleum, but the project was ultimately abandoned due to concerns about promoting totalitarian symbolism. Nearby stood the Lion Monument, commemorating the fallen soldiers of the 147th Infantry Regiment, which survived the destruction and was later relocated to Olsztynek. An interesting fact is that General Korten was also buried in the mausoleum, adding further historical significance to the site in the context of Polish and German history and the memory of World War I.
