Olsztynek

Olsztynek, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, is a city with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. It was founded in 1351 by the Ostróda Komtur Günter von Hohenstein and is known for its Gothic church and the remains of 14th and 15th-century city walls. The urban layout of the city is typical of Teutonic towns, with a market square as the central point surrounded by perpendicular streets. The city boasts numerous historical monuments, including a Teutonic castle, a rectory, and a town hall built between 1915 and 1923. Olsztynek is also a cultural center, home to an open-air museum – the Museum of Folk Architecture – which showcases local architecture and folklore. Historically, Olsztynek witnessed many events, such as the Battle of Tannenberg, and has been part of Poland since 1945. During World War II, the city housed a prisoner-of-war camp, and much of its infrastructure was destroyed after the war. The city also has a sports tradition, with the Olimpia Olsztynek club participating in local competitions since 1946. Olsztynek is surrounded by beautiful cycling routes, attracting enthusiasts of active recreation. It is worth noting the diversity of religious communities in the city, with a Roman Catholic church and Evangelical branches. Olsztynek is both a place of great historical significance and a modern tourist center, offering residents and visitors numerous attractions and recreational opportunities.
