wikipedia
Hrubieszów is a town located in southeastern Poland, in the Lublin Voivodeship, serving as the seat of Hrubieszów County. As the easternmost town in Poland, it lies in the Hrubieszów Valley, an area known for its exceptionally fertile soil. The town boasts a rich historical heritage dating back to the Middle Ages, with the first mentions of Hrubieszów recorded in 1254. In the 14th century, it became part of the Chełm Land, and in 1400, it was granted town rights. Hrubieszów is a place of multicultural character, historically inhabited by Poles, Ruthenians, and Jews, who settled here as early as the 15th century. In the 19th century, during a period of dynamic development, the town became one of the major centers of the Lublin Voivodeship. Architecturally, Hrubieszów is distinguished by its churches, such as St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, the former Uniate church, and the Du Chateau manor complex, which now houses the Stanisław Staszic Museum. The town’s cultural heritage also includes historic synagogues and Jewish cemeteries, underscoring the centuries-long presence of Jews in the region. During World War II, Hrubieszów witnessed the tragedy of the Holocaust, which left a profound mark on the town’s history. Today, Hrubieszów blends its local traditions with administrative, service, cultural, and educational functions. The town engages in cooperation with international partners, including cities in Ukraine and Montenegro. An interesting fact is that Hrubieszów was also the birthplace of several notable figures, such as the writer Bolesław Prus. Known for its beautiful landscapes along the Huczwa River and tourist attractions like the Nadbużański Cycling Route, Hrubieszów is also a sports hub, with football clubs and track and field athletics. Despite its challenging historical experiences, Hrubieszów remains a place rich in culture and tradition, integrating diverse regional influences.
