wikipedia
Janów Lubelski is a town in the Lublin Voivodeship, covering an area of 14.80 km² with a population of 11,661 residents according to 2020 data. It was established in 1640 on the site of the former village of Biała, based on a foundation privilege granted by King Władysław IV. The town gained the status of an administrative and commercial center for the Zamoyski Ordynacja, playing a significant role in local trade. Janów was home to numerous craft guilds, and its development in the 18th century was marked by the construction of urban infrastructure, despite being ravaged by major fires during that period. The 19th century saw the growth of industry and infrastructure, and after World War I, the town expanded significantly. Janów Lubelski endured difficult times during World War II, and the post-war destruction led to a decline in population. Reconstruction took place in the 1950s and 1960s, contributing to the development of industry and services. The town is rich in cultural heritage, including the Dominican monastery complex and the world's oldest monument to Tadeusz Kościuszko, erected in 1818. The surrounding area features valuable natural landscapes, such as the Janów Forests and the Solska Wilderness, which are among the best destinations for hiking and cycling. Janów Lubelski is also known for its ethnomusicological traditions, including the reconstruction of the folk instrument – the suka biłgorajska. The Regional Museum, natural history exhibits, and educational institutions enrich the town's cultural offerings, while numerous sports clubs reflect its active community life. Cooperation with partner cities from various regions of Poland fosters cultural and social exchange. Thus, Janów Lubelski is a place where rich cultural traditions, significant historical events, and natural beauty converge.
