Jezewo

Jeżewo is a Kociewian village located in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in Świecie County. It is the seat of the gmina (municipality) of the same name and has approximately 1,903 inhabitants, making it the second-largest settlement in the municipality. The history of Jeżewo dates back to the 13th century, with the first mention of the village recorded in 1293. During the Middle Ages, it belonged to the bishops of Włocławek and for centuries developed as a local center with rich infrastructure, including a mill, a school, and a church. In 1412, the founding document was renewed, contributing to the further development of the settlement. In the following centuries, Jeżewo declined due to wars, including the Polish-Swedish conflicts, but from the 19th century onward, it gained importance thanks to the development of the railway. During the interwar period, the village experienced dynamic growth, driven by initiatives of the local clergy and an increase in population. After World War II, further development took place, with the construction of houses, a kindergarten, a fire station, a sewage treatment plant, and a water supply network, significantly improving the living conditions of the residents. Architecturally, the parish church stands out, built in the 20th century as a result of a thorough reconstruction, along with remnants of earlier religious buildings. Throughout its history, Jeżewo has faced various challenges but retains rich traditions and cultural references, manifested in local associations such as the Rural Housewives' Circle and the People's Bank. The village witnessed many dramatic events, including persecution during the Nazi occupation, which left a lasting mark on the local community's memory. An interesting fact is that Jeżewo became the seat of a deanery in 1992, highlighting its regional significance. Nearby is the settlement of Dąbrowa, which houses the Forest District headquarters, reflecting the village's connection to the surrounding nature. Today, Jeżewo combines a rich history, local traditions, and dynamic development, making it an important point in the Kociewie region.
