wikipedia
Koźle, now part of Kędzierzyn-Koźle in the Opole Voivodeship, is one of the oldest Silesian towns with a rich history dating back to 1281, when it was granted town rights. Its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes made Koźle a site of key military importance, as evidenced by early settlements and fortifications. In the Middle Ages, Koźle was the seat of a castellany, and its turbulent history includes invasions by Czech forces and frequent changes of power, especially after the disappearance of the Piast dynasty. After paying homage to the Czech King Wenceslaus II, the town became part of the Duchy of Koźle-Bytom and later came under Habsburg rule, which influenced the further development of the region. In the 17th century, Koźle experienced a crisis due to the Thirty Years' War, which burned the town and the Austrian fortress, while in the 18th century, building restrictions prevented reconstruction after further destruction. In the 19th century, the town became an important industrial center, contributing to population growth. In 1873, the abolition of the fortress opened the way for economic development, and the construction of the port between 1891 and 1908 made Koźle an important transport hub. In the 20th century, the town participated in plebiscites and experienced the tragedies of World War II, followed by repolonization. Today, Koźle boasts a diverse cultural offer, including the Municipal Cultural Center, which organizes artistic events, and a museum that promotes local history. Among the town's architectural attractions are the Gothic-Renaissance Church of St. Sigismund and the castle complex with preserved fragments of medieval fortifications. Important road and rail routes run through Koźle, and the city authorities are committed to developing infrastructure to support the local economy and services for residents. Koźle is also known for various forms of sports and social activities, making it an interesting place both from a historical and contemporary perspective.
