Kurzętnik is a village in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship that serves as the seat of the Kurzętnik municipality. It boasts a rich historical heritage dating back to the Middle Ages, when it was granted town rights in the 14th century. The village is situated in the picturesque setting of a moraine upland near the Drwęca River and features varied elevations, ranging from 142 meters above sea level in Upper Kurzętnik to 85 meters above sea level in the oldest part of the village. Within Kurzętnik, the ruins of the Chełmno Chapter Castle remain, along with the original medieval urban layout featuring streets and a market square, which attest to its historical commercial significance. Kurzętnik is home to numerous cultural events, such as the Passion of Christ Mystery Play and activities organized by local artistic groups, celebrating the works of Hieronim Derdowski and other artists. The village also hosts the Center for Culture, Sports, Tourism, and Recreation, which organizes various cultural events and operates the Municipal Public Library. Additionally, Kurzętnik features a ski resort, and its sporting history is represented by a football club and sections dedicated to various disciplines. It is worth noting that after Poland regained independence following World War I, the local parish priest was arrested here, and during World War II, under occupation, residents courageously rescued Jews. Today, through a partnership with the Jaszuny municipality in Lithuania, Kurzętnik blends its traditions with international relations. A notable attraction is the observation tower opened in 2022, which, along with an educational trail, draws tourists and highlights important historical events of the region, such as the Battle of Grunwald.
