wikipedia
Łagisza is a district of Będzin, historically linked to a municipality of the same name that existed from 1915 to 1954. Architecturally, Łagisza is valued primarily for its small brick filial church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built between 1924 and 1949, which now serves as a funeral chapel. The district covers an area of 8.63 km² and is home to approximately 4,000 residents, characterized by single-family housing. From a historical perspective, the first mentions of Łagisza date back to 1254, and the area was known for its dense settlement as early as ancient times, as confirmed by archaeological finds, including a Bronze Age cemetery. Infrastructure began to develop in the 17th century, and in the 19th century, open-pit coal mines contributed to a significant increase in population. In 1914, the municipality of Łagisza was established, encompassing nearby villages as well. During World War II, Łagisza witnessed a tragic chapter in history—the Germans renamed it Mildenfeld and established a subcamp of a concentration camp here. After the war, one of Poland's largest power plants, the "Łagisza" Power Plant, was built in the district, adding to its industrial heritage. The culture of Łagisza is reflected in the activities of the Roman Catholic parish and the Jehovah's Witnesses congregation. The parish was established in 1924 and gradually expanded its reach, fostering a local community. Besides the church, residents have access to various institutions such as a primary school, a library, and a shelter for the homeless. Interestingly, Łagisza has a rich tradition of local initiatives, including a Volunteer Fire Department, which has been active since the 1920s, and the Society of Friends of Łagisza, which supports local activities. Additionally, Łagisza hosts a variety of endeavors, from sports to charitable work. It is also worth noting that the district lies along the Katowice-Warsaw route, underscoring its transportation significance. Łagisza's economy is primarily based on industry, which influences its development, especially in the context of urban planning. These transformations, combined with the area's historical richness and social activity, create a unique image of Łagisza as a district with strong cultural and industrial roots, while still undergoing dynamic changes.
