wikipedia
Lake Malta, also known as the Malta Reservoir, is an artificial reservoir in Poznań, created by damming the Cybina River and put into use in 1952. The reservoir covers an area of up to 67.5 hectares, with a length of approximately 2.2 km, making it the largest artificial body of water in the city. The lake's name originates from the Order of the Knights of Malta, and its design reflects the recreational traditions of the region, which date back to the time of the Prussian Partition. In the 1980s, the area underwent modernization according to a design by Klemens Mikuła, which contributed to the intensive development of water sports and the restoration of the site's historical value. The lake attracted residents of Poznań due to its proximity to the city center and its picturesque landscape, rich in historical significance. During the interwar period, ambitious concepts for a national park were developed, though they were never fully realized. After World War II, the Malta area gained significant importance, becoming a venue for international sports competitions such as European and World Championships in rowing and canoeing. Unfortunately, in the 1970s, the lake began to suffer from pollution and shallowing issues, leading to the decision to drain it and carry out reclamation. The process of cleaning the lakebed takes place every four years, and in 2021, another thorough cleanup was conducted, reinforcing the shoreline infrastructure. Despite pollution threats, the lake's ecosystem has unique characteristics, including a diverse and rich ichthyofauna. Lake Malta has also become a local center for water sports, international competitions, and recreation, with its shores abundant in various sports and recreational facilities, making it a popular destination not only in Poznań but throughout Poland. Interestingly, the lake has been completely drained several times, enabling detailed studies of the biomass of local species.
