wikipedia
Grodzisko in Lubin is an early medieval settlement located on the island of Wolin, near the Szczecin Lagoon. It operates as a tourist attraction, offering beautiful views and a rich history. Situated on a high cliff, it allowed for control over water routes. The first traces of settlement in the area date back to the 9th century, and the surroundings of the stronghold have been meticulously studied both architecturally and archaeologically. The site was surrounded by a defensive rampart, likely built at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries, making it a strategically important location. A significant discovery was the 12th-century Church of St. Nicholas, unearthed during excavations conducted between 2008 and 2011, along with a cemetery containing the remains of men and women, indicating baptism in the region and the adoption of Christianity. Dirhams, silver coins used by Arab merchants dating back to the 9th–10th centuries, were also found, pointing to trade and cultural exchange in the area. The defensive rampart, destroyed at the end of the 12th century, was rebuilt, and its remnants were discovered in the form of stones and wooden structures. Next to the church foundations, archaeologists uncovered the remains of a late medieval residential tower, which indicates the development of defensive and residential architecture in the region. An interesting find includes records highlighting the beautiful views from this location, which attracted residents and builders of residences, showcasing Lubin’s landscape appeal. Grodzisko brings together various historical layers, from early medieval settlements to later structures, serving as a valuable source of information about ancient cultures and social life.
