Marine Fisheries Museum in Niechorz

The Maritime Fishing Museum in Niechorze, opened on June 11, 1994, is an important institution that collects and preserves monuments related to the history, tradition, and fishing culture of Western Pomerania. The initiative to establish the museum came from the local community, particularly the Association of Lovers of Fishing Traditions. The museum is housed in a stylish villa from the 1930s on Bursztynowa Avenue, which gives it a unique architectural character that attracts tourists. The museum's interior includes three small halls on two floors, where exhibits related to fishing are displayed, as well as outdoor exhibitions. The museum cultivates the traditions of small-scale fishing, making it one of the few places in Poland where these values are nurtured. In the permanent exhibition, visitors can see the Baltic fishing exhibition, which presents not only the specifics of the fisherman's profession but also the cultural aspects of the region, including fishing and navigational equipment, as well as a collection of amber. Additionally, on the museum grounds, there is a unique exhibition of fishing boats donated by local fishermen, which adds authenticity to the museum. As part of temporary exhibitions, since May 2019, visitors can explore the "Voyage Across Seas and Oceans" exhibition, which showcases ship models, including military and fishing vessels, from the collections of the National Museum in Szczecin and private collections. The themes of the models are rich and diverse, allowing for a broader understanding of the context of navigation, not only in Polish waters. The museum not only serves an educational function but also constitutes an important element of local culture, attracting enthusiasts of history and fishing traditions, as well as tourists seeking unique experiences related to the maritime heritage of Pomerania. An interesting fact is that the museum is organized based on donations and the volunteer work of the local community, which highlights its commitment to promoting and preserving the fishing heritage in the region.
