Markusy is a rural commune located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, within Elbląg County, with its seat in the village of Markusy. Historically, the commune was part of the Elbląg Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998. It covers an area of 108.56 km², of which 75% is agricultural land and only 4% is forested. For comparison, in June 2004, it was inhabited by 4,085 people, while by the end of 2019, this number had decreased to 4,048 residents. The commune consists of 15 village administrations, such as Balewo, Markusy, and Żurawiec, as well as other smaller localities like Nowe Kępniewo and Zdroje. The Markusy commune borders communes such as Dzierzgoń, Elbląg, and Gronowo Elbląskie. The region is home to the Jezioro Drużno Nature Reserve, which highlights the area's rich fauna and flora. Architecturally, the commune is characterized primarily by rural-style residential buildings, as well as historic structures that attest to its rich cultural heritage. From a historical perspective, Markusy reflects Poland's administrative changes over the years and the influences of various cultures, which are evident in local traditions and customs. An interesting fact is the declining population, which may indicate migration of younger generations to larger cities in search of better employment opportunities.
