wikipedia
The Monk's Oak, protected as a natural monument, is an ancient tree growing in a forest near the road from Mnichów to Mniszek in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. It is estimated to be 500–700 years old, with a circumference of just over 7 meters at a height of 1.3 meters, while at ground level it exceeds 10 meters. The oak's name refers to the legend of a monk named Rotwald, the founder of the nearby village of Mnichów, who was killed by robbers while defending a woman. However, the natural monument faces challenges, as in recent years it has suffered significant damage due to weather conditions. Despite its status, the Monk's Oak is not widely promoted in tourist guides, making it difficult to visit. There are also no informational signs in its vicinity—neither about the tree itself nor about the history and legends related to the monks. The Monk's Oak is not only a natural treasure but also an element of local cultural heritage, combining historical aspects and the legendary narrative of the region. What makes it fascinating is not only its age but also the fact that contemporary challenges related to the protection of such valuable natural elements require greater attention and efforts to promote their significance. Without sufficient information and protection, such natural monuments may be forgotten, even though they are carriers of local history and culture.
